I learned a lot from the course. PMs at Microsoft, ATB, have positive reviews about the course.
I received 20+ rejections emails when transitioning into PM. Applying to PM roles by submitting your resume is not always effective.
1. Internal Transition
2. Networking
3. Acting as a PM
4. Direct Pitch
5. Volunteering
6. Side projects
Let's go!
1. Internal Transition:
This was how I transitioned into Product management. This is useful if your current company has PMs.
Here are 3 steps to achieve this
📍Get close to the product team
📍 Let them know your plan
📍 Volunteer to help with PM tasks
This is very effective because you
💡 have direct access to the hiring manager (HM)/team members
💡can combine both roles for a short time
2. Networking:
PMs like Diego and Myself have gotten interviews and by networking with PMs and Product leaders on LinkedIn
This is a long-term strategy. It is useful for developing as a PM and landing roles.
Here are tips to help network effectively
📍 Add value to other PMs
📍Do not request for referrals immediately.
📍 Get noticed! If they are creators, Leave comments on their posts.
📍Volunteer to help them with tasks
3. Acting as a PM:
This is useful for getting PM jobs in small startups. Your goal is to convince an executive you can contribute to their goals.
Tips
📍Sign up as a new user on the product
📍Talk to customers
📍Figure major pain points
📍 Brainstorm solutions
📍 Prototype solutions
📍Get feedback
📍Share with the hiring manager
4. Direct Pitch:
This is useful if you know the recruiter or Hiring manager advertising a role
Tips
📍Apply for the role
📍Connect with several HMs/recruiters in the company
📍 Register your interest in the role by sharing 3-5 reasons why you are a great fit for the role from the job description.
5. Volunteering
You can volunteer as a PM in a company for a few months.
This is useful because
📍 this will help you learn PM skills
📍You can include the experience on your resume
6. Start a side project:
Side projects are an opportunity for you to practice PM skills.
You can :
🎯team up with design or Engineering friends
🎯 work alone by leveraging no-code tools to test out your ideas.
These strategies are not silver bullets but they increase your chance of landing your PM role.
